It was in recent months that I read about a new law being considered and it’s this. They want to push an idea of having High School students have a definitive plan in order to get their diploma.
To graduate from a public high school in Chicago, students will soon have to meet a new and unusual requirement:
- Letter of a secured job
- Received a letter of acceptance to college
- Trade apprenticeship
- Gap year program
- Military sign up
I like the idea but it’s a bunch of great rules that will be difficult to enforce. As much as we all would like to see our children have a plan it will be hard for every kid to get it together. The student did pass all of their classes and deserve to graduate but it’s hard to watch them go out into a crazy world with no plan. We can as a community start to add some of this great idea to the last year of high school. If we make the students excited about what they can do and what they can become if they have a plan we will see results. My suggestion would be have a class or a required Essay that needs to be written about what their plans would be. Then you know they have a bit of direction as opposed to blindly entering the world with no direction. Think about it.
